Where Can I See Flamingos in Portugal? Start at the Salt Pans
In the Algarve they feed in salt pans and shallows: Ludo, Olhão, Tavira, and Castro Marim on the Guadiana. Likeliest autumn to early spring, and never promised.
In southern Portugal you look for flamingos in salt pans. They feed in the pans and in the shallow edges of the lagoon, and in and around the Ria Formosa that means the pans at Ludo on Faro’s western edge, the pans at Olhão, and the salt pans of Tavira and Santa Luzia further east. Beyond the lagoon, at the mouth of the Guadiana, the Castro Marim reserve is a separate protected area where flamingos can be seen all year.

In the Ria Formosa they are around for much of the year and most dependable from autumn into early spring. No tour can promise them. One trip on this site goes to the salt pans where they feed: an open-jeep day that stops at Necton’s pans in Olhão, inside the natural park.
Why the salt pans
Twice a day high water covers the mudflats, and the birds that were feeding there move into the salt pans to wait for it to fall. A 2025 study in the lagoon found that salt pans gain importance as feeding ground when the tidal flats are covered. Birding guides describe the Tavira pans as a popular high-tide roost where greater flamingos can usually be found, and they tell you to visit at high tide.
At Ludo, at the park’s western end near Faro airport, birding sources list flamingos in the pans along with spoonbills, booted eagles and nesting white storks. Ludo is part of the natural park, and you can walk it.
When to go
| Months | Flamingos in and around the Ria Formosa |
|---|---|
| September and October | Back in good numbers by autumn |
| November to March | Most dependable |
| April and May | Fewer, but often still some |
| June to August | Possible, not dependable |
Sources disagree on the peak month, so the table gives ranges rather than one best month. A September 2026 reviewer on the Faro solar boat saw “around 25-30 flamingos as a bonus”. The rest of the lagoon’s calendar is in the best time for birdwatching.
Why nobody can promise them
Flamingos move between pans and shallows with the tide and through the day. A boat from Faro sees them on some days and not on others.
The operators say as much. The catamaran from Faro marina: “There’s no guarantee that you’ll see birds.” The sunset walk at Ludo: “wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.” The jeep day below lists its flamingo and wildlife viewing as “subject to nature”.
The jeep day to the Olhão pans
Of the eight trips this site covers, this is the one whose flamingo stop is inside the Ria Formosa: “Algarve: Open Jeep Adventure, Flamingos & Ria Formosa Trip”, run by TRUESPIRIT Algarve. It is a full day in an open-roof 4x4 from the Albufeira area. Alongside a coffee stop and off-road driving on dirt tracks in the hills inland, the itinerary gives 45 minutes to Necton, a company that makes sea salt and microalgae at Belamandil in Olhão; its salt pans are the flamingo stop. Then come Olhão and its market, lunch at Fuseta (not included), a 1.5-hour boat trip through the Ria Formosa with a talk on oyster farming, and an hour and a half on the beach at Praia da Barra Velha.
It costs from about $77 on the booking platform and is rated 4.8 over 18 reviews. Pickup in the Albufeira area is included, with free meeting points in Albufeira, Armação de Pêra and Vilamoura, and English is among its five guiding languages. It isn’t suitable for children under three, pregnant women or wheelchair users. One family took their 8-year-old daughters and wrote that they loved it. Another reviewer’s caveat is fair: “You spend a bit too much time in the car, but that’s simply due to the distance.”
If you’re staying around Albufeira or Vilamoura and flamingos are the point of the day, this is the trip.

Looking on your own
Portugal’s protected-areas portal suggests a route through the Santa Luzia and Tavira salt pans for stilts, avocets, flamingos and herons, and the Quatro Águas road runs between the Tavira pans and the river Gilão. Go at high tide. At Ludo, park before the bridge to Faro Island and take the path on the right. Where to watch birds in Faro covers Ludo and the other spots you can walk.
Castro Marim is worth knowing about if you’re staying at the eastern end of the Algarve. It was the first nature reserve declared in mainland Portugal, in 1975, salt pans cover about a third of it, and flamingos and black-winged stilts are there all year. It is a different wetland from the Ria Formosa.
The other birds of the pans, from spoonbills to avocets, are in the Ria Formosa birds guide, and every trip is compared on the homepage.
Flamingo seasons from Portuguese birding and tourism sources, which disagree on the peak; Castro Marim from Portugal’s tourism board; tour details from the operators’ listings. Checked October 2026.
