Is Ria Formosa Worth Visiting, and How Do You Visit It?

Yes: birders get a full list in any season, everyone else a quiet trip on the water. How to visit from Faro, and the catches: tides, heat, no flamingo promise.

Updated October 2026

Yes, and not only for birders. The Ria Formosa is a natural park of about 18,000 hectares. Five barrier islands and two peninsulas shelter some 55 to 60 km of lagoon, salt marsh and salt pans, and twice a day the tide uncovers much of it. It has been on the Ramsar list of internationally important wetlands since 1980, in 2010 it was elected one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal, and well over 200 bird species have been recorded here.

A birder will find something in every month. Anyone else gets a quiet trip on the water that starts at the edge of Faro’s old town, and for a first visit the solar boat from Rua da Porta Nova is the easy way in.

What kind of place it is

It’s a natural park, not a national park; Portugal has only one of those, Peneda-Gerês, in the far north. It isn’t a UNESCO site either, whatever some property adverts say. Its international labels are the Ramsar listing and EU Special Protection Area status, part of the Natura 2000 network.

No major river feeds the lagoon; the tide drives the water in and out. Under the surface, seagrass meadows shelter young fish and shellfish, and a seahorse sanctuary was created in 2020. The lagoon supplies about nine in ten of Portugal’s farmed clams, and when the tide drops, the flats where the clams grow are the same flats the waders come to feed on.

For a birder

Yes, in any month, as long as you split your time between the water and the land. Flamingos and spoonbills feed in the salt pans, the freshwater reeds at São Lourenço and Ludo hold the purple swamphen, the park’s emblem, and from autumn to spring the mudflats fill with waders. Ospreys and Caspian terns winter here, and little terns, Kentish plovers and stilts nest in summer. Out on Deserta island is the largest breeding colony of Audouin’s gull in the world, a rare Mediterranean gull, with more than 7,000 nests counted in 2024.

A good plan: a boat into the channels at low tide for the waders, a walk past the pans at Ludo around high tide, the São Lourenço hide for the reed-bed birds, and Quinta de Marim at Olhão if you have another morning. The biologist-guided tour at Ludo is four hours with someone who knows where to stop.

For everyone else

The solar boat run by fromherefaro is the gentlest introduction. A guide names the birds, binoculars are handed out, and the boat moves slowly and silently through the channels. One guest wrote that they’d “love to do it all again in a different season”.

If a ride appeals more than a boat, the Segway tour at Ludo is 1.5 hours on the park’s paths with a guide. Families staying around Albufeira can make a day of it with the open-jeep trip, which takes in the Olhão salt pans, a boat and a beach.

The catches

The birds can be far away

At low tide much of the lagoon floor drains, the waders spread out across the mudflats, and from the Faro shore they can be a long way off. A boat or a hide closes the gap, and so do binoculars. Three trips on this site include them (both solar boats and the Segway), and the biologist tour rents them on request.

Summer is hot

Go early or late. The sunset walk at Ludo is timed for golden hour, and most listings ask you to bring sun cream.

Flamingos are never certain

They’re most dependable from autumn into early spring, and they turn up on some days and not on others. The flamingo guide explains where they feed.

Spring changes one boat

Lands’ boat tour runs as a walk in April and May; the other solar boat on Rua da Porta Nova has reviews from late May.

How to visit the Ria Formosa

From Faro, the solar boats leave from Rua da Porta Nova by the old-town walls, a short walk from the marina, and the catamaran from about 100 metres in front of Hotel Eva Senses. Ferries and water taxis to Ilha Deserta and Ilha do Farol leave from the Porta Nova pier. The Ludo walks and the Segway start out by the airport, at the crab roundabout on the road to Praia de Faro. We found no park-wide entry ticket; Quinta de Marim charges a small fee at reception. All eight trips on this site offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and neither solar boat nor the jeep day is suitable for wheelchair users.
